It is getting to be quite common for a client to call in a panic after receiving an official-looking letter stating that they owe the State of Texas a large sum of money for Medicaid expenses paid to benefit their parent or other family member. The State expects that most will simply write a check.
While such a letter should not be ignored, it is also no reason to panic. The letter is sent by a private company hired by a State of Texas agency (DADS) much like a collection agency. And also like a collection agency, they will continue to send letters with increasing threats of legal action.
As I stated in a previous post last Fall, do not allow yourself to be bullied. Contact my office and we will analyze what should be done. It may be possible to reduce or eliminate the amount claimed by the State. But certain deadlines need to be met. So don't hesitate to contact us.
